With the deepening application of Industry 4.0 technologies, China’s chemical industry is undergoing a profound transformation driven by automation. The widespread adoption of intelligent control systems, industrial robots, and IoT technologies has not only significantly improved production efficiency and safety but also raised higher requirements for the skill levels of employees and the intelligence of equipment. This “quiet revolution” is reshaping the industry landscape, pushing chemical enterprises toward higher-end and greener development.

Penetration of Automation Technologies: From “Human Monitoring” to “Data-Driven”

According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the penetration rate of automation equipment in China’s chemical industry exceeded 65% in 2023, with the numerical control rate of key processes reaching 52%, an increase of nearly 30% compared to five years ago.

“Operations that once relied on the experience of veteran workers are now optimized automatically by algorithms,” said Safety Director Manager Li. “After automation upgrades, a production line with an annual output of 300,000 tons saw a 40% reduction in failure rates and a 15% decrease in energy consumption.”

Evolution of Talent Demand: From “Blue-Collar Technicians” to “Multidisciplinary Engineers”

Under the wave of automation, the industry’s talent structure has undergone dramatic changes. Traditional roles such as valve inspections and manual record-keeping are declining rapidly, replaced by an urgent demand for talent in areas like intelligent system maintenance, data analysis, and industrial cybersecurity.

“We plan to phase out about 20% of outdated positions while adding new roles such as intelligent control process engineers,” revealed an HR representative. Data from the Ministry of Education shows that in 2023, Chinese universities introduced 12 new chemical-related majors, including “Intelligent Process Equipment and Control,” while vocational schools expanded courses in industrial robot operation and PLC programming. The China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation noted that the industry will need an additional 500,000 multidisciplinary professionals proficient in both chemical processes and information technology over the next five years.

Pressure for Equipment Upgrades: Intelligent Hardware and Data Loops Become Essential

The rise in automation levels has imposed stringent demands on equipment reliability, leading to upgraded industry standards. The push for equipment intelligence is also transforming the supply chain, with the market share of domestic high-end pressure transmitters and high-precision spectrometers jumping from 18% to 35% in just three years.

The chemical industry is reconstructing productivity through intelligentization, and the race to upgrade talent and equipment has only just begun.
