Shortly after Dow Chemical announced the closure of its Barry plant in the UK and scaling back its European operations, its largest plant in the United States exploded, with the 7,000-acre facility engulfed in flames! One-fifth of global production capacity is affected, impacting suppliers to BYD and Tesla, adding new uncertainties to the still fragile economic recovery of 2025.
On the evening of October 6, 2025, local time, a sudden fire broke out at the core production base of global chemical giant Dow Chemical’s largest US plant in Freeport, Texas. The explosion’s shockwave rattled surrounding communities, and the 7,000-acre (approximately 28 square kilometers) core production area was engulfed in a sea of fire.
Local residents reported that the blast caused homes several miles away to shake. The Freeport Fire Department rushed to the scene promptly after receiving emergency calls to combat the fire.
As of 11:15 PM that night, an official final update stated that the fire in Plant B had been successfully brought under control. The flames were consistently contained within the plant’s boundaries, causing no direct impact on the surrounding community. The specific cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Fortunately, despite the scale of the explosion, there were no casualties.
The massive 7,000-acre plant in Freeport is not an ordinary production base; it is Dow’s largest production facility within the United States and the “heart” of Dow Chemical’s global production network.
In terms of production capacity, this plant manufactures nearly half of Dow’s US products and approximately one-fifth of the products sold globally.
