China’s First Large-Capacity Bio-Based PC Special Engineering Plastic Debuts, Breaking Foreign Monopoly

On August 30, bio-based PC special engineering plastic, developed through a collaboration between CNPC Engineerings Kunlun Engineering Company and Puyang Shengtong Juyuan, was unveiled at the 7th New Materials Industry Expo. As the largest production capacity facility of its kind in China, it uses bio-based monomers to replace bisphenol A, offering superior performance without containing bisphenol A, thereby breaking the monopoly of foreign companies.

From a process perspective, PC synthesis is generally divided into two methods: phosgene and non-phosgene processes.

Phosgene Process: This includes solution phosgenation, interfacial polycondensation, and transesterification. Interfacial polycondensation is the most commonly used method, where bisphenol A sodium salt reacts with phosgene to produce polycarbonate. This process is mature, stable, and easy to operate.

Non-Phosgene Process: This primarily involves a transesterification reaction between dimethyl carbonate and phenol to produce diphenyl carbonate, which then undergoes transesterification and polycondensation with bisphenol A to form polycarbonate. Known as a “green process,” it does not use toxic phosgene as a raw material, making it safer for the environment and operators.

Bio-based PC is polymerized via the non-phosgene process using bio-based bisphenol A and diphenyl carbonate as raw materials. The production process requires high-temperature reactions and exhaust gas treatment.

Amid intense market competition, the PC industry during the “15th Five-Year Plan” period will focus on high-end products:

Medical-Grade PC: The medical industry demands extremely high safety and reliability from materials. FDA certification involves a lengthy cycle and requires passing rigorous tests such as biocompatibility.

Optical-Grade PC: A light transmittance of 92% or even higher is required, necessitating breakthroughs in nano-level control technology.

Special Grades of PC: Varieties such as flame-retardant PC and bio-based PC are worth noting.
